HOC

A solution to an increasingly alarming trend of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in athletes, Hoc is an app—coupled with a wearable skullcap—that provides real-time impact data that guides coaches through the concussion testing process.

The team consists of Miles Vallejos, Mia Biagini, Bryce Hymans and Gurdeep Bassi.

The Cap

The wearable portion of the solution. The skullcap is a tight-fighting cap that fits snugly under helmets without hindering players. The removable sensors wrap around the helmet and capture impact telemetry which is sent to the HOC app.

Insights

  • Medical history plays an important factor in determining the course of recovery
  • Smaller impacts often go unnoticed but, in large quantities, can cause serious harm in the long-term
  • Coaches may not be properly trained to diagnose or recognize symptoms of concussions

Opportunities

  • Impacts registered will be monitored so athletes cannot hide potentially serious injuries
  • Coaches will be held accountable for player safety
  • Medical information can be relayed quickly and efficiently to medical personnel
